Borrowing With No Payslip: Options for Homemakers

If you are a homemaker, informal earner, or someone whose income simply does not come with a monthly payslip, applying for a loan can feel like it was designed for someone else's life. It was not designed around a payslip specifically โ€” it was designed around proof of ability to repay, and a payslip is only one way to show that. This guide covers what else counts as income evidence, how joint-applicant and guarantor routes actually work for the other person involved, and what to be careful of.

Before anything else: whatever route you take, the resulting instalment must be affordable against income you can actually document and control โ€” not against money that someone else earns and might not continue to share with you.

What Counts as Income Evidence Without a Payslip

A payslip is simply one form of documented, recurring income. Lenders care about the underlying pattern โ€” money coming in regularly, from a traceable source, over a meaningful period โ€” not the specific document format. If you do not have a payslip, other forms of evidence can serve the same purpose:

  • Bank statements showing regular deposits over at least three to six months, ideally from an identifiable source such as a client, tenant, or buyer rather than unexplained cash-ins.
  • Rental income, supported by a tenancy agreement and bank statements showing the rent actually being received each month.
  • Small-business or trading records, such as sales records, invoices, or a simple bookkeeping ledger, if you run a home business, sell online, or operate a stall.
  • Borang B, the income tax return filed by individuals with business or non-salaried income, which some lenders accept as a documented annual income figure.
  • EPF voluntary contribution statements, if you contribute as a self-employed or non-working spouse, which can support but do not by themselves prove ongoing income.

The common thread across all of these is consistency and traceability. A single large deposit, or income that cannot be traced to any identifiable source, is far less useful to a lender than a smaller but steady and explainable pattern.

The Joint-Applicant and Guarantor Routes

If your own documented income is thin or irregular, two common routes bring a second person's financial standing into the application: applying jointly, or having someone act as a guarantor. These are different arrangements with different consequences, and it is worth being clear-eyed about both before involving anyone.

A joint applicant is co-responsible for the loan from day one. Their income and CCRIS conduct are assessed alongside yours, and if repayments are missed, the impact on their credit record is immediate and equal to yours โ€” it is not a backup arrangement, it is shared ownership of the debt.

A guarantor is not usually assessed as a co-borrower on the same terms, but steps in only if the primary borrower fails to pay, and that exposure is real rather than a formality โ€” see Being a Loan Guarantor: Responsibilities and Risks before anyone agrees to it. Many people underestimate what they are taking on until a payment is actually missed.

Before asking anyone, including a spouse, parent, or sibling, to be a joint applicant or guarantor, have an honest conversation about what happens if a payment is missed. Whoever takes on that role should understand they are putting their own credit record and, potentially, their own money at risk โ€” not simply lending their name.

Why a Spouse's Income Is Not Automatically Yours

A common assumption is that a spouse's steady salary should count toward a homemaker's loan application simply because the household shares that income day to day. Lenders generally do not see it that way unless your spouse is formally part of the application, as a joint applicant or guarantor, with their own documents and consent.

This distinction matters for two reasons. First, your spouse's income supporting the household does not create a credit relationship between you and a lender โ€” you cannot borrow against money you do not have documented access to or legal responsibility for. Second, if your spouse is not willing to be formally named on the loan, no amount of describing household income will substitute for that. If the plan depends on a spouse's income, the application needs to include the spouse, not just mention them.

Affordability Comes Before Product Choice

Illustrative example: Suppose you run a small home-based catering business and your bank statements show average monthly deposits of RM1,800 over the past six months, after accounting for ingredient costs you pay separately. You have no existing loan commitments. If a lender applies an illustrative 60% DSR ceiling against this documented income, the maximum total monthly commitment works out to about RM1,080.

RM1,800 ร— 60% = RM1,080 maximum monthly commitment (illustrative)

This is before you decide whether RM1,080 a month is actually something your household can absorb once you account for ingredient costs, business slow months, and ordinary living expenses โ€” the DSR ceiling tells you what a lender might allow, not what is wise for you to commit to. Work out your own comfortable number before you look at loan products, not after.

What to Avoid

Homemakers and informal earners without a payslip are a group frequently targeted by illegal, unlicensed lenders who advertise approval with no income documents at all. A licensed moneylender in Malaysia operates under the Moneylenders Act 1951 and is required to assess your ability to repay โ€” a willingness to skip that assessment entirely is a warning sign, not a convenience.

Before proceeding with any offer, confirm the lender is licensed under the Moneylenders Act 1951 and never pay an upfront fee to "release" a loan that has not yet been disbursed. If you are unsure how to read a lender's documented process, our guide on self-employed income proof covers the same documentation principles that apply whether your income comes from informal trading, freelance work, or a home business. If your income instead comes from ride-hailing or delivery work, our dedicated guide on that situation goes into more detail than this article covers.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Submitting unexplained cash deposits as proof of income. A lender generally cannot verify where unexplained cash came from, which makes it weak evidence compared with traceable transfers or recorded sales.

Assuming a household's combined income is automatically "your" income. Only income you can document as your own, or income from someone formally named on the application, counts toward what you can borrow.

Asking someone to guarantee a loan without explaining the real risk. A guarantor who agrees without understanding the consequences of a missed payment is taking on more than most people realise.

Choosing a product before checking affordability. Picking a loan amount or tenure first, then trying to make your income fit it, tends to produce a worse outcome than starting from what you can genuinely afford.

Engaging with a lender that skips documentation entirely. This is one of the clearest signs of an unlicensed operator, regardless of how convenient or fast the process is advertised to be.

FAQ

Can I get a loan with absolutely no income documents at all?

It is unlikely with a licensed lender, since the Moneylenders Act 1951 requires an assessment of your ability to repay. Any offer that skips documentation entirely should be treated as a warning sign rather than good news.

Is Borang B enough on its own to prove income?

It can support your application as a documented annual income figure, but lenders usually also want to see more recent evidence, such as bank statements, since Borang B reflects the previous tax year rather than your current situation.

What is the real difference between a joint applicant and a guarantor?

A joint applicant shares responsibility for the loan from the start and is assessed as a co-borrower. A guarantor typically steps in only if the borrower defaults, but can still face consequences to their own credit record and finances if that happens.

Can my husband's salary be used for my loan application without him being named on it?

Generally no. For a spouse's income to count, they usually need to be formally part of the application as a joint applicant or guarantor, with their own documents and consent.

What if my income varies a lot month to month, like a seasonal business?

Provide as many months of bank statements or sales records as you can, and be upfront about the pattern. Lenders may average your income over a longer period rather than relying on your highest or lowest month.

How do I know if a lender targeting homemakers is legitimate?

Confirm they are licensed under the Moneylenders Act 1951, that they ask for genuine documentation of your ability to repay, and that they never ask for an upfront fee to release a loan. A lender skipping all of this is a strong warning sign.

Work out what you can genuinely afford before choosing a product. Check your eligibility and read our guide on self-employed income proof for more detail on documenting non-salaried income โ€” if your income comes from ride-hailing or delivery work specifically, see our gig-worker income guide instead.
